In the power vacuum, ethnic gangs took over the street in violence that mirrored the mayhem of 1999, when the United Nations supervised an independence referendum that ended 24 years of oppressive Indonesian occupation.

Renewed clashes between the military, police and angry mobs has sparked over 100 000 people to move into refugee camps in the city or flee the capital alltogether.

Renegade Soldier
A fraction of renegade soldiers at their stronghold in the mountains of Maubisse, three hours outside of the capital. They had left their post because of ethic disrimination and then fired on East Timorese police officers in late May. Here; a month later, they hand over their weapons as a sign of pacification.
