International Picture Story
Dark Democracy chronicles three moths of protest and civil unrest that ensued in Brazil after a 19 cent increase in bus fares enraged a growing middle class. What started out as peaceful student protests quickly gained momentum as hundreds of thousands filled the streets to protest the government's continued lack of concern for social services and quality of life. As the protests continued over the course of the summer so did both sides' use of violence. The following frames, shot between the months of June, July and August of 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, all during night time protests, offer a glimpse into the processes that can occur as a state attempts to succeed as a democratic powerhouse in the 21st century.
