    The Romani: A Forgotten Generation
    Award of Excellence
    Documentary

Living without running water, food, education, or basic medical care, is beyond difficult for the Romani “Gypsy” people living in the colony just outside the Romanian village of Cheriu. With eleven children, the Hendre-Lucaci family struggles to survive the cold winter months living in a two-room clay house located in the heart of the colony. Often labeled as thieves and beggars, or called "Tzigani", a derogatory Romanian term that means "Gypsy", the Romani people face the stigma of being second-class citizens. “We just need someone to help us.” says Angelica Hendre. This is the struggle of a people who have been forgotten by society. The cycle of poverty, no education, and a lifetime of hardship is sure to repeat itself in future generations, save intervention of a grand scale.
