Starting Over - After the Blaze
The Brown's uninsured home caught fire on April 28. When they returned home from work and school, they found almost everything destroyed. With a low-paying job and three boys, Russ Brown and his wife Connie struggled to find an affordable apartment. With the help of the American Red Cross they stayed in a hotel for five days before finding an apartment in Clearfield, a 45-minute commute by train to Salt Lake City. The house was given to the Brown's by Russ' grandfather, so it was difficult for him to move on from the house in which he spent most of his life.
Russ Brown reacts to seeing his house hours after it caught fire in Salt Lake City on Monday, April 28, 2008. "What am I going to do?" he asked. "It doesn't feel real. I just keep thinking I'm going to go in and sit down and watch TV." Even though he lost his home, Brown said he was relieved his family was gone during the blaze. "Life will go on," he said.
