Wildfires are spreading rapidly across California, forcing people and animals to flee. Climate change is altering the landscape as drought-plagued vegetation primes the hills for ignition. Evacuees, who number in the tens of thousands, may not know for days whether their homes remain. Some refuse to leave. Flames engulf homes; lives are altered forever. Over 14,000 firefighters battle flames around the clock, while flying embers spark new fires. Millions of acres have burned and thousands of homes have been destroyed so far in California during this record-breaking fire season.
