Somewhere Over the Coal Country
August 30, 2023
The green hills and hollers of West Virginia is rich with culture and history, many of the history seems forgotten. In 2016, there was a boom focused on coal miners in the West Virginia region, which was only boosted even more with the book Hillbilly Elegy the same year. Outsiders wondered if the coal industry would survive. In 2014, McDowell County was also a focus for the 40 year mark since The War on Poverty was a campaign promise, with Lyndon Johnson’s great society programs. These focused themes came and went as people in the region still worked in the mines every morning and people in the city in McDowell experienced the long term effects of living in a low income county. Many have not asked what race relations in the state are, what is the current state of coal miners, and what are the economic dyer conditions of people in counties such as McDowell, which is currently classified as the third poorest county in America. A state rarely discussed current day outside of the politics of Joe Manchin and Jim Justice, but unraveled is what coal and economic hardship will mean in the state for the next generation.
