Award of Excellence: One Percent Chance

Just one week after his high school graduation, a car accident changed the trajectory of John Walter’s life. The doctors did everything to stabilize his condition, but after eight days in the hospital, John’s brain would not stop swelling. The Walter family was informed that John had a less than one percent chance of surviving, and they were told to say their final goodbyes. But in that hospital room, something that could only be described as a miracle happened. Surrounded by his hopeful loved ones, the brain swelling began to subside, and John fought like hell for a second chance at life.

This is the story of the aftermath, of the resilience of the Walter family. This is the story of a determined mother, of a loving father, of two tough younger siblings. This is the story of a young man who chooses to fight every single day. This is One Percent Chance.
