Lonnie Hilsmeyer keeps antlers on his mantel from some of the 14 deer he raises. He invites a few of them into living room. The Vietnam veteran finds solace raising the animals at his Stendal home. He also is a hunter, but never of his beloved backyard deer. “Just like a dog or a cat is to other people, the deer is to me, just a pet,” he says.
