William R. Hodges of Macomb, 87, sits up straight on a bench as he watches passersby on his daily midday stroll around the square downtown on Aug. 6 in the alley by Sullivan Taylor Coffee House. After seeing the world and living in Paris, Chicago and California, Hodges, a World War II veteran, came back to Macomb in 1971 to be with his mother Clara Barker in her later years, prior to her death in 1987. Since, he has yearned to move back to Paris, but does not think it's affordable at his age. "Everything in town compared to when I left here in 1943, the courthouse is about the only thing that looks the same. There used to be five men's clothing stores on the square, but now there is only one. It's changed a lot, and I have to say this — it's not all for the better."
