CPOY 70 Domestic Picture Story Award of Excellence: (Wo)mandatory conscription

In Norway, all men over the age of eighteen has mandatory conscription in the Norwegian armed forces. But in 2014 the Norwegian government decided that also women should have conscription on an equal footing with men. As one out of only ten countries worldwide. In Denmark military service for women are still voluntary, but still, the amount of women who enlist increases. At the Vordingborg barracks, outside of Copenhagen, 8 out of 42 recruits are now female.

Private Drachmann has the bar-shift in the barracks evening gathering. Surrounded by boys, without her uniform, she feels feminine again. She says that she sometimes think the female presence in the group helps balance the testosteron overload that sometimes come out of all men environments.
