CPOY 71 Interpretive Project Silver: Never Trust a Soul Where I'm From

Never Trust a Soul Where I'm From is a portrait of urban realities shown through the experiences of a family that has suffered tragic loss with each generation. Quotes and dialogue are paired with photos taken in the months following their most recent loss—the loss of 18-year-old James Johnson Jr. aka “Swagg.” This project is based on the belief that where people live and what they experience growing up in that environment does have a lasting effect on their lives.

There’s a lot of hate in the streets. People don’t want to see you doing better than them. That’s what got my cousin killed and my other homeboys killed...Jealousy, hate…they died over jealousy, envy and hate...People will hate you because you known. Niggas build up so much hate that they get to the point where they feel like they have to kill. They need to see you fall...
