Silver: Lost in Translation
March 3, 2017
Suad Jabr is a sophomore at UNC-Chapel Hill studying Arabic. Jabr was named after their paternal grandmother who passed away before they were born. Born in Palestine, she had Jabr's father in 1954 on a rainy January night in a tent in a refugee camp in Gaza, six years after the Nakba (Arabic for "the catastrophe"), when over 700,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from their homes. Soon after, her husband (Jabr's grandfather) went to Egypt in search of work while she stayed and raised their son, and in the 60's, they moved to Egypt to join him. Jabr is learning Arabic to be able to speak to family members who don't know English and reconnect with their culture and history, but also said that if they could talk to anyone in Arabic, they would want to ask their grandmother: "Was leaving Palestine hard? Were you afraid?" (No post-capture editing software or software capture filters were used. This photo was made by projecting the "postcard" onto the subject while the photo was being taken.)
