“He was my best friend. My only son and my best friend, and I love him." At a protest on Michigan Ave. on Black Friday, Shirley Lewis tells me about her son Charles W. Lewis Jr., whose shooting death investigation was mishandled by the Chicago PD. Shirley raised a college graduate who ran his own business, but the police told her he was simply a gang member killed by other gang members. "I wasn't afraid then and I'm not afraid now. I want justice for my son...I've got kids, I've got grandchildren. I don't want them to have to grow up to this."
