CPOY 73 Interpretive Project Silver: "There must be a reason why I eat so much."

They hide their extreme eating habits. They hide the groceries, the food and the empty packaging. They have tried every diet but every time it ends in failure. And for every pound lost there are more gained. Nobody sees it and very few knows about the phenomena, but 40.000-50.000 Danish people are suffering from binge eating disorder (BED). An eating disorder that is not accepted in the European health system (ICD-10) even though it is the most widespread.

Karen Jensen, 64 years old, senior citizen. “Sometimes I loose 30 kilos but then I gain 35 kilos. Then I loose 20 kilos, and then I gain 25 kilos. It is constantly like that and I don’t think I have ever weighed as much as I do now.” Karen hides food. One of the places are behind the computer. She does it when her husband is sitting behind her watching tv. She knows that he is aware of what she is doing but she just can’t help herself doing it. “The look I can get if I eat an ice cream in the street. I would rather sit in my car than outside in the sun. Nobody is going to see when I eat.”
