Since 2000, over 15,000 refugees have been resettled to Syracuse, New York and twice that to wider
Central New York. Most have fled extreme poverty, environmental disasters, political turmoil, or conflict and have since begun life anew, many arriving without a penny or a word of English. Over half of those resettled are women and young girls, each with an individual and important experience of what it is to recreate home in a new country, thousands of miles from where they were born. For the last 18 months I have had the privilege of spending time with refugee communities throughout Central New York, focusing on the vast and varied experiences of women and girls. Drawn to their stories because I identify as a woman and because I recognize their voices to be silenced by both culture and society, the aim is to communicate their individual and collective experiences and perspectives to a wider audience
