CPOY 76 Documentary Award of Excellence: Near

My project is a story about people who have lost touch with their families. Every day they live without news of their mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters. All of them are ethnic Kazakhs imprisoned in “re-education camps” in Xinjiang - a region in northwest China, in which historically Turkic peoples live - Uighurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz. For about 7 years, under the pretext of combating terrorist and separatist sentiments, China has been building "vocational training centers" throughout the region. This is what Beijing calls them. In the world community, they are called "re-education camps" and are compared to Nazi concentration camps. In the Chinese, representatives of national minorities are also tortured and forcibly held. My photographs show people in their homes and things on a black background - shirts, scarves, jackets, photographs - all that remains of people who once lived nearby. At this moment the project captures and records the stories of 14 heroes - they all live in Almaty and the surrounding area (the names of the settlements are not disclosed for the safety of the heroes). The search for heroes and photography has been conducted since May 2021. The first contacts were established close to the PRC Consulate in Almaty - the heroes of the project come there every day and hold rallies to draw attention to the problem and get at least some answer from the Chinese authorities. But he has been gone for more than 200 days - almost as long as daily rallies, for which the heroes of the project have to overcome tens, and sometimes hundreds of kilometers, to the city. Almost every day ends with detentions, psychological and physical pressure, surveillance, beatings. But never - with support and solution to the problem.
