Gold: Not Alone, Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children
Not Alone follows Tracy Tate, a mother from Columbus, Ohio who lost her son Jaleel to homicide in September 2020. Jaleel was 25 years old when he was shot and killed a block from his mother’s apartment in southeast Columbus. In 2020, Columbus saw a record-breaking 176 homicides while national homicide rates increased 21 percent. In response to the growing epidemic of violence in Columbus, Malissa Thomas-St.Clair co-founded Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children to provide community support and resources to nearly 2,000 members. Tracy joined the organization after her son’s death to help her cope with the burden of grief. This year’s homicide rate in Columbus is already outpacing 2020. Tracy’s experience is a window for audiences to understand the intergenerational loss and trauma that gun violence can create, how the burden of this loss often falls on mothers in Black communities, and what they are doing to address it.
