Valera lets out herd to take it to the nearest well. It's still winter but the snow has melted already and sheep are no longer able to receive the necessary water just by consuming snow while grazing. Agricultural industry makes up about 22% of Kalmykia's gross regional product. It is surpassed only by growing year by year transportation and storage services industry, but still, compared to other regions of Russia, its share in GRP is high. 85% of Kalmykia's territory is considered farmland, of which 80% are taken by pastures. Livestock farming is the basis of the agricultural sector of the republic's economy. Farmers breed mostly beef cattle, meat and fine-wool sheep. After the devastating heatwave of 2020, livestock numbers steeply declined. Farmers who were not able to sell or move animals to the neighbouring regions where pastures had not burned saw their animals die by hundreds. Some of them were not able to recover from losses and went out of business.
