Members of a local freestyle wrestling team take turns doing pullups at the end of endurance training day at the hill above the village of Darvag, Republic of Dagestan, Russia. Darvag is a monoethnic Azerbaijani village located in the southern part of Republic of Dagestan. Its history dates back to V - VII centuries AD, when a settlement was built around one of the watchtowers of Dagh-Bary, the Mountain Wall. Only a little part of the wall, heritage of Sassanid Empire, is left. In Darvag itself, it is two small wall fragments, one in the village centre and one on the hill. Republic of Dagestan has a long history of its people practicing varieties of wrestling. The local sportsmen have been dominating freestyle wrestling arena for past decades — 3 out of 5 Russia's Tokyo Olympic champions were born there; in the Russian national championships from 20% to 40% of the winners are from Dagestan.
