Qarun Lake, located in Fayoum, Egypt, is a historic lake that was once connected to one of the branches of the Nile River, making it one of the oldest freshwater lakes. Over time, however, its nature has changed due to the discharge of agricultural and industrial wastewater, turning it into a saltwater lake. Despite the environmental challenges the lake faces, residents of Fayoum and nearby governorates such as Beni Suef and Giza continue to visit it in search of a nearby summer escape. The lake remains an affordable option for locals, with most of its shores either free or available for a small fee. However, this year was surprising for many visitors as entrance fees for some beaches increased to 70 EGP (around $1.50), compared to previous years where the cost did not exceed 10 EGP, which is less than a quarter of a dollar. Nevertheless, there are still many unofficial, free shores along the lake, where people can spend their day by the water without incurring significant expenses. Many families use the vehicles or buses they traveled in as places to rest and enjoy their day by the lake. This story captures the daily life around the lake and the people who come to enjoy their day, whether on the official or unofficial beaches, highlighting the simple summer atmosphere and the natural surrounding Lake Qarun.
