A long-form photographic essay or extended narrative story which portrays important contemporary concerns or social issues. To encourage long-term projects, images from previous year's work may be included, provided none of them have previously won a CPOY award.

Glouster was once a bustling town in southeastern Ohio, due to the large deposits of coal in the area. Since the 1960's, when the coal mines moved out, Glouster has slowly become a victim of neglect.
