Stephanie Lash kisses her boyfriend Matt Bays while her friend Marla and Marla's boy friend Tony Guzman wait to leave for the homecoming dance at Athens High School. Bays and Guzman had driven down from Columbus and rented a room at the Sunset Motel in Athens, Ohio, where Marla and Stephanie planned to spend the night. "We're gonna tell my Dad we're at a friends house and stay at the Motel with our boyfriends" Stephanie said. Stephanie's father did not know that her boyfriend was taking her to the dance.
