Darren and Kim stepped up to the responsibility of being a kinship home for Kim's grandchildren after they were taken away from their mother, Angel, due to her drug problems. “She gave birth to an addicted child, the state of Ohio stepped in and took Donavon and was looking at taking the other two little ones,” Darren said. “Kim and I both stepped up and said hey, they’re better off right here. They’re safe, they’re happy, and have a good home to live in.”
