Mayor Bill Schmitt, left, stood humbled by a standing ovation of more than 100 of his peers and friends as city employees stood to honor his 20-year career at the city's top post during his retirement luncheon on Dec. 2. "I'll miss the people that make up the city, the interaction with them, the department heads, the other mayors and truly, the citizens, many who have come to me over the years to express their needs in Jasper," he said. "I don't have any regrets. The city of Jasper will be fine without me, and now I will get to enjoy the city as one of its residents yet again."
