CPOY 70 Domestic Picture Story Award of Excellence: Finding Walden

Until recently Liam and Valentina Wilson lived a quiet life in a small country home they rented near Paint Lick, Kentucky. They are ardent pacifists and their beliefs include existing in peace with all living things and with nature. For the Wilsons, this means not consuming fossil fuels or electricity, growing most of their own food and maintaining a vegan diet. A fire last October irreparably damaged their house. Finding a new home that could accommodate their lifestyle has taken time. “We thought at the time that it would force us to change the way we had been living,” Liam says. In April the Wilsons moved into a new house in McKee, Kentucky where they are trying to rebuild.

"Valentina was trying to hold onto [our house] because she had put so much of her time and energy into the garden," Liam said. "Once it was clear to her that it was not going to be possible, that we had done everything we could to try to stay there and it was just not going to happen...Then she was ready and didn’t have any misgivings. Her only concern was if we were going to have enough direct sunlight to grow things."
