CPOY 70 Domestic Picture Story Award of Excellence: Finding Walden

Until recently Liam and Valentina Wilson lived a quiet life in a small country home they rented near Paint Lick, Kentucky. They are ardent pacifists and their beliefs include existing in peace with all living things and with nature. For the Wilsons, this means not consuming fossil fuels or electricity, growing most of their own food and maintaining a vegan diet. A fire last October irreparably damaged their house. Finding a new home that could accommodate their lifestyle has taken time. “We thought at the time that it would force us to change the way we had been living,” Liam says. In April the Wilsons moved into a new house in McKee, Kentucky where they are trying to rebuild.

Valentina reads Thoreau to Liam as he prepares lunch in their new home. The Wilsons are avid readers. Some of their favorite authors are Leo Tolstoy and Mahatma Gandhi, who have influenced their pacifist beliefs. "We get strength from being at peace [and] doing things according to our beliefs and our philosophy," Liam says.
