In Tanzania, people with albinism represent one in every 1429 births, a much higher rate than in any other nation. And they are believed to have magic powers. Historically they have been abducted, attacked and even killed, in the belief that bodyparts bring luck and fortune to whomever carries the ashes of these in amulets, or bury their bodyparts near their homes or offices. Especially in the areas near Lake Victoria, these believes are still present today.Since 2010 the Tanzanian government has been collecting albinos to live in safehouses, to keep them safe from thugs and kidnappers. Buhangiya is one of those safehouses.
