Each team would select one "champion" in each of the three forms of fencing to duel in one bout each. Best two out of three total bouts wins. No. 1 Notre Dame received a first round bye and played North Carolina after they defeated Duke. Litynski scored the winning touch in the last point of the last bout in sabre against Notre Dame to claim the title.
