Silver: In Their Words
September 27, 2019

“I am proud of myself because I am a good person and I am also kind helpful and respectful. The best part of being women is showing boys you can do the same thing.” In Their Words is a collaborative, participatory project between myself and a group of young refugee girls in Syracuse, New York. The project aims to shift the locus of power in storytelling by asking each girl to pose as they want and to then write on their own image. The use of a Polaroid camera made the exchange more intimate and fun as each young woman was able to keep a print. The project was done in celebration of International Women’s Day; each was asked to respond to the question, “Why are you proud to be a girl?”
