In the heart of the German State of Rhineland-Palatinate the largest US millitary AirForce base outside of the United States is located - Ramstein AirBase. About 50 000 US citizens currently live in the region around Kaiserslautern. The presence of the Americans affects the region tremendously. Many people depend directly or indirectly financially on the Airbase. Additionally there is a strong influence on culture and infrastructure. In 2013 German media reported on the significance of the AirBase in the global drone war, that is discussed controversially in terms of international law. In the year 2015 documents got published which provided evidence of the critical role of Ramstein. The German government refuses to act and refers to the statement of the United States, saying Ramstein is not involved in the drone war. How does it feel for a region depending economically on a millitary base, knowing that without it, civilian killings through drones wouldn't be possible. In my work I combine pictures of everyday life in the village with small Black and White cutouts of pictures documenting the AirBase from the outside to create a tension between these two worlds.
