Award of Excellence: Fight Against Forest Fires on Evia
August 10, 2021
Ilias Nikolakarakos tries to put out fires. The volunteer travelled more than 370km from the Mani region to help the people of Ellinika in the north of Evia island, who have been in the forest for days, fighting with all their means against the fires that started over a week ago. The forest and pine resin is their livelihood. They claim that they have not received any support from the fire brigade for the first days. In the summer of 2021 in Greece, nearly 100,000 hectares of forest and farmland have burned during the worst wave of forest fires since 2007. The fires destroyed about 50,000 hectares on Evia alone.
