Thomas, 8, waves an Egyptian flag to signal his pigeons to come home, while balancing on the ledge of a pigeon coop in Cairo, Egypt, on August 20, 2023. Manshiyat Nasser, known as “Garbage City,” is a suburb of Cairo. The community of 60,000 mostly Coptic Christians, sort and recycle 85 percent of Cairo’s trash. High above the hectic streets below, residents have been raising pigeons for hundreds of years. The ancient hobby of pigeon breeding is practiced and passed on from generation to generation. Pigeon fanciers construct multi-story wooden coops atop the roofs of the buildings. The birds are prized for their beauty and are kept for competition between neighbors.
