In the wake of Hurricane Maria, thousands of people were left without access to medical care. The Iniciativa Comunitaria is a local group of Puerto Rican volunteers who formed a health brigade consisting of doctors, nurses and anyone else who just wants to help. The group's mission is to travel all across the island and provide free health care to anyone who needs it, often in remote parts of Puerto Rico. The group's leader, José Vargas, is not a doctor or a nurse but provides love and support to everyone he meets. In this photo he speaks to a bedridden woman, named Carmen, in her bed. José tells her that she reminds him of his own grandmother, also named Carmen.
