Award of Excellence: The Generational Legacy of War
March 26, 2018
Phuong Nguyen, age 39, sits in his home outside of Da Nang, Vietnam. Phuong is a second-generation Agent Orange victim; his father was a transporter for the Vietcong during the Vietnam War and was exposed to the defoliant during his service. Phuong has dedicated his life to helping others who have been affected by Agent Orange, working full-time at the Da Nang Association for Victims of Agent Orange (DAVA Centre). When asked if he was ever angry because he was not born “like everyone else” he paused for a moment before answering. “My anger turned to happiness when I realized that I could help people; it was only then that I accepted that maybe this was my destiny.”
