They share memories of their grandfather who was arrested in 1930 as a kulak farm owner and a mill lessor. He was convoyed via Kirov to one of the biggest construction sites at the time being – that of the “Magnitka” plant. After six years, he finally returned home.
There was nothing left from the mill, cattle, and farm left but an empty and half-destroyed farmhouse. His belongings were sold by the policeman a Sunday auction. His wife was left alone with seven kids. Her parents had rejected her, so she was forced to file for divorce to be able to find a job and avoid exile. Back in the day, this was the primary action plan of many who fell victim to repressions. Over only the few first months of the expropriation of the kulaks, 140 724 people were arrested. As Tatiana and Larisa would later come to find out, at least four more people in their family suffered reprisals.
