About 2500 children with Down syndrome are born every year in Russia. According to statistics, 8 of 10 parents give up for adoption at birth. Avik (Avenir) is the fifth child in the household. Husband left his mother Larisa soon after Avik’s birth. Two years later Larisa together with parents who have kids with disabilities set up a non-commercial center By Means of Good [Dorogoju Dobra], a unique space in Kirov. They unite and support other families, engage medical professionals and volunteers in working with children with different health issues. Larisa is a volunteer herself, just as her two daughters (one of them, Avik’s elder sister Ilona, is hugging him in the picture).
