Although the sight of someone sucking gasoline out of a gas tank may seem shocking to some, gas siphoning is an established practice to move the gas to another container. In recent years, Cuba has faced severe economic conditions and fuel shortages, which have led to gas prices skyrocketing well over what the average Cuban can realistically afford. Living on an island with limited resources and a fuel crisis means siphoning gas in the center of Havana—although it is typically done with more advanced equipment for safety reasons—has become a useful way to preserve precious resources.
