Tahira Begam navigates her small boat through the newly bloomed lotus flowers in Wular Lake, Kashmir—a sight unseen for over 30 years at Garoora, Bandipora on July 18, 2025. Once one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes, Wular was famed for its lotus plants, whose edible stems, nadru, sustained more than 5,000 families and were a cornerstone of traditional Kashmiri cuisine. In 1992, devastating floods choked the lake with silt, wiping out the lotus beds and plunging local communities into economic hardship. In the decades that followed, the lake shrank dramatically, while invasive willow plantations and unchecked waste further degraded its ecosystem, and the prized nadru vanished from local kitchens. In 2020, the Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WUCMA) launched a major restoration drive, removing millions of cubic meters of silt and uprooting over two million willow trees. Today, the lotus flowers have returned in full bloom, signaling not only ecological recovery but also the revival of a cultural and economic lifeline for the communities that call Wular home.
