Europe anno 2016. Born in 1987 I grew up in Europe in the 90's. The Cold War had ended, the Berlin wall had fallen and the borders of Europe were open. From family holidays back then I remember the closed, grey buildings at the borders as an odd anachronistic leftover from another age. The world was different now and it was this new Europe I lived in until now.
In 2015 my view on Europe changed. Border controls were reintroduced with growing speed and fences were raised. Hungary was first to put up a razor wire fence along its southern border to Serbia and defended it with a humanistic view that most Europeans could not understand at all. The last opening in the fence was the railway and a razor wire wrapped train wagon was placed in the hole and the police turned away all refugees in dramatic and bloody scenes. Three months later in January 2016, at the time of this photo, no refugees arrived at the border any more. They had found other ways. But the reinforcement of borders is spreading in Europe and I fear the view on humans that most Europeans for just a short while ago found awful have become the normal. The Europe I grew up in has disappeared.
