More than 1 million refugees arrived to Europe in 2015. Not since the Second World War had so many people been forced to flee their homes and the refugee crisis became the biggest political challenge all over Europe. It led to the reintroduction of border controls in many countries and it divided the European populations as some felt a humanitarian duty to help while others feared the immigration would change their national countries for the worse.
The vast majority of the refugees sailed from Turkey to the northern coast of Lesbos. The small Greek island is just ten kilometers away from the Turkish coast but the crossing can be very dangerous and not everyone survived the journey. For those who did, a difficult time on the island arose as accommodation, food and transport to the mainland was limited and the island struggled to cope with the growing number of people.
