An ink transfer of a photo of a Chinese tapestry that interracial adoptee Marshall Bailey has in his room. Cultural objects like these are often the few remaining elements of an adoptee’s birth heritage they have after being separated from their roots. “In many ways, I feel as though I was raised as a white child. My parents made few attempts to educate me about Chinese culture.” Bailey said. “I feel out of place among other Asian Americans and Chinese Americans.” The transfer was made by taking a photo of the tapestry, printing it on inkAID transfer film and pasting it from the film to watercolor paper that is hand-painted with isopropyl alcohol. The resulting print has missing fragments of the original image, much like adoptees are missing parts of their roots and identity.
