A portrait of Marshall Bailey, who was adopted from China as a baby, in Washington, D.C. on November 3, 2021. Many adoptees of color are raised in white families in places that lack racial and cultural ethnicity. “Growing up in a majority white town was alienating in some ways. Diversity was a word that people often laughed at.” Bailey said. “I felt very pressured to fit in with others and to simply accept the culture of ‘we don’t see color’ that I saw all around me.”
