An ink transfer of a photo of Emma Fujuan Roberts-Vaurio’s adoption paperwork. Legal documents like this are a combination of an adoptee’s birth language and the language they grew up in, marking where they are from and where they are going. These documents are also often one of the few remaining elements of an adoptee’s birth heritage they have after being separated from their roots. The transfer was made by taking a photo of the tapestry, printing it on inkAID transfer film and pasting it from the film to watercolor paper that is hand-painted with isopropyl alcohol. The resulting print has missing fragments of the original image, much like adoptees are missing parts of their roots and identity.
