An ink transfer of a photo of Tony Hynes and his two adoptive mothers. Hynes was adopted when he was five. Three months later the adoption was overturned by a panel of judges who said that a white same-sex household was not the right fit for Hynes. He was still raised by the couple, but was a ward of the state and wasn’t formally adopted until he was nineteen years old. Hynes grew up in predominantly white communities. “There were times when I felt a lack of racial authenticity.” Hynes said. “In those particular times I thought, ‘Am I Black enough?’ and ‘Can I connect with other people who are Black individuals?’” The transfer was made by taking a photo of the tapestry, printing it on inkAID transfer film and pasting it from the film to watercolor paper that is hand-painted with isopropyl alcohol. The resulting print has missing fragments of the original image, much like adoptees are missing parts of their roots and identity.
