CPOY 65 Documentary Gold: Southeast Side Iowa City

A long-form photographic essay or extended narrative story which portrays important contemporary concerns or social issues. To encourage long-term projects, images from previous year's work may be included, provided none of them have previously won a CPOY award.

Jamal "Lyric" James carries a stereo with his friends Jerry Hayes and Tony Perry. The boys are part of a dance crew called Fly Camp. Because they are with out a set place to hold rehearsals, they often carry the stereo to and from the park or school grounds and practice outside in the evenings.
