College Photographer of the Year judging takes place Oct., 22, 2021 - Oct. 31, 2021 in Columbia, Missouri at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Judges for the 76th Annual competition are David Barred, Marie D. De Jesus, Jared Soares, Sally Stapleton, Mallory Benedict, Alex Wong, Ed Kashi, Liz Baylen and Lauren Frohne.
Liz O. Baylen is a senior audio editor at the New York Times working on narrative audio projects as well as “The Daily” podcast. She came to The Times in 2017 as the Director of Enterprise Video leading a team of journalists in producing a robust and ambitious body of short documentaries like “Four Days With a Rohingya Family in Exile” and “Sexual Abuse Inside Immigration Detention Facilities.” From there she was tapped to become a part of the core team that created the Times’ Emmy-winning television series, “The Weekly.”
Before joining the New York Times, she worked at The Los Angeles Times as a visual journalist. She has spent her career reporting and producing narrative work in national, international and investigative realms. She’s a three-time Pulitzer finalist, most recently in 2013 for her photography documenting the opioid epidemic here in the United States. She was also the creative director and lead video editor for “Beyond 7 Billion,” a Los Angeles Times series about world population that was honored with a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award in 2013. In 2011 she was a part of the team that was honored with a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for its coverage of the aftermath of Haiti's earthquake. Her still and video journalism has also been recognized by World Press Photo, the National Press Photographers Association and White House News Photographers Association. She’s also been named Multimedia Photographer of the Year by Pictures of the Year International. She got her start at The Washington Times after graduating from Ohio University.
