College Photographer of the Year judging takes place Oct., 22, 2021 - Oct. 31, 2021 in Columbia, Missouri at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Judges for the 76th Annual competition are David Barred, Marie D. De Jesus, Jared Soares, Sally Stapleton, Mallory Benedict, Alex Wong, Ed Kashi, Liz Baylen and Lauren Frohne.
Sally Stapleton is the senior assignment editor at Magnum Photos in New York. She has held leadership roles in newsrooms across the U.S., most recently at The Associated Press and before that at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, and Minneapolis Star-Tribune. For 14 years Sally was a deputy executive photo editor at the AP where she was responsible for leading teams of photographers that covered Princess Diana's funeral, the September 11 attacks, the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and the 1998 US embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.
Coverage of the latter two events won Pulitzer Prizes, as did the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's coverage of the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue massacre while Sally was managing editor.
Sally has a degree in Journalism and an MA in Photojournalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism. In 2016, she was a Pollner Distinguished Professor in multimedia journalism at the University of Montana School of Journalism. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Rwanda in 2002 and worked with local journalists and university students in documentary photography.
