Sophie Chappell is a second-year graduate student at the Jonathan B. Murray Center for Documentary Journalism. She graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2024 with bachelor's degrees in journalism and public history. As an undergrad, Sophie held several leadership positions. She was editor-in-chief of The Maneater, Mizzou’s student newspaper, as a sophomore and went on to work as an education reporter and assistant city editor for the Columbia Missourian as an upperclassman. She held two oral history internships with the State Historical Society of Missouri, where she studied life histories of queer musicians from Missouri in order to preserve the state’s LGBTQIA+ history. Sophie is currently a photo editor with the Columbia Missourian, and held three positions with the 77th Missouri Photo Workshop. She worked on the Documentary team, the Toning team and was the workshop’s truck driver. Sophie is also working on her first film, which explores the life of her 91-year old grandmother and how generational secrets affect familial dynamics.
